About Peabody

About George Peabody Elementary School

GEORGE PEABODY is a successful, safe, and small elementary school with a family feel located in San Francisco’s Inner Richmond neighborhood. We serve a diverse community of nearly 300 students who reflect our multicultural city.
Our talented and experienced staff provides each student with meaningful learning experiences through purposeful instruction and a well-articulated curriculum. We work to ensure that all students learn the skills and gain the knowledge needed to build the foundation to lead successful lives and become productive citizens.
We also strive to ensure that every student leaves George Peabody with a positive elementary school experience full of fond memories, close friendships, a love of learning, and a curiosity of the world beyond San Francisco.

After-School Enrichment

The Richmond Neighborhood Center provides Peabody families with quality after-school programming. Additionally, the PTA sponsors a wide array of after-school enrichment classes to expand our students' learning and help them discover new interests and talents. Some classes typically offered are Art, Chess, Jr. Engineering, YMakers, Video Game Programming, Drama, Eco Heroes, Sewing and Handcrafts, Yoga and four different sport classes.

Arts and Music

At George Peabody we offer a robust arts curriculum that spans kindergarten through fifth grade, with all classes receiving at least one semester of music instruction. We are fortunate to continue our music instruction with long-time music teacher, Ms. Delanda.
In kindergarten and first grade, students focus on dance and movement. In second and third grades, the focus shifts to visual arts. Fourth and fifth graders focus on the performing arts. Consultants and SFUSD Specialist Teachers teach our arts curriculum; however, classroom teachers undertake art projects in the classroom to complement and build upon the core curriculum. Teachers have been trained in the Visual Thinking Skills program in order to teach monthly lessons designed to use artwork analysis as a way to promote critical thinking and a greater appreciation of visual artworks.
George Peabody also has long-time community partnerships that expand our students' arts curriculum. Second and third grade students also participate in the Dance in the Schools and Communities program coordinated by the San Francisco Ballet.

Garden

George Peabody partners with Strategic Energy Innovations to teach environmental stewardship and science, and to coordinate our garden program for all grade levels. It is great to have students out in the garden! The Eco Heroes program is also open to our fourth and fifth graders to support younger students in their exploration of the garden during recesses, and to keep our school litter free.

Peabody Works / Physical Education

The Peabody Works program is designed to inspire in children a lifelong love of sports and physical activity in addition to building class community and good sportsmanship. All grades receive one class game-time session per week with Coach Dan and their classroom teacher. Students also receive weekly PE lessons from Mr. Hill, our certificated SFUSD PE teacher. All students receive at least 200 minutes of PE every ten days. And our 4th and 5th graders have the opportunity to participate in the Junior Coach leadership program which trains students to help lead game times with the coach during the morning and lunch recesses.

Parent Involvement

Parents are our students’ first teachers and play a vital role at our school. The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meets monthly to plan school-wide events, receive updates on our fundraising efforts, provide feedback about after-school programs, listen to guest speakers and the monthly principal update and to help coordinate parent volunteer efforts at our school. Parents are an essential part of the Peabody community and are always welcome at our school.

Community Partnerships

George Peabody partners with many SFUSD departments and outside agencies to support our students and enhance our programming. Some of these partnerships include the federally funded America Reads Program which places specially trained University of San Francisco students at GP to provide literacy support to identified students in the primary grades. The Jewish Coalition for Literacy works with identified students to provide one-to-one literacy tutoring. We partner with Mentoring for Success to offer a student mentoring program. Many of our classroom teachers serve as mentor teachers for education students from local universities.

Librarian

The library doors are back open and the shelves are stocked with  a good mix of fiction, non-fiction, and up-to-date reference materials. Ms. Annie and a host of volunteers are always available to ensure our young readers have the right books to expand their reading and stretch their imagination.

Technology

George Peabody provides Chromebooks for every student who needs one as part of their grade-level curriculum. Keyboarding lessons begin in the second grade and all students in grades two-five have accounts with a keyboarding program. Fourth and fifth grade students are expected to type their published Writing Workshop pieces. All second through fifth grade students have accounts with an on-line math program and are expected to utilize the site several times per week.
